  • Second installment in the "Toss Insight Stablecoin" trilogy, examining the challenges and strategic responses for a Korean won stablecoin
  • Analyzes global trends alongside practical implementation strategies tailored to Korea's market

Toss Insight, the research institute of Toss, announced the publication of its second stablecoin report, The Korean Won's Choice in the Era of Dollar Stablecoins: Global Trends and Domestic Implementation Strategies. Building on the previously released Stablecoins: The Rise of a New Financial Infrastructure, the report analyzes the challenges facing a Korean won stablecoin and the strategies to address them, as dollar-backed stablecoins continue to spread as part of the global financial infrastructure.

The report notes that dollar-backed stablecoins are expanding their reach across payments, settlement, and fund transfers, and examines major international cases including JPMorgan, Coinbase, and Stripe. It highlights how stablecoins are being integrated into the financial system through the tokenization of real-world assets, the development of payment rails, and the inflow of institutional capital.

The report also addresses the distinctive characteristics of the Korean market. It argues that for a Korean won stablecoin to play a meaningful role within Korea's already advanced payment infrastructure, it is essential to implement a strategy tailored to the country's financial and payment structures.

Toss Insight outlines the potential applications of a Korean won stablecoin across three domains - consumers, merchants and e-commerce, and capital markets - and proposes realistic directions for adoption suited to the domestic environment.

"Stablecoins are an important topic being discussed amid the ongoing transformation of the global financial infrastructure," said Kihoon Hong, Head of Research at Toss Insight. "We hope this report serves as a reference that helps move the conversation around a Korean won stablecoin toward more concrete and actionable directions."
