Toss Surpasses 10,000 Mini Apps One Year After Launching "Apps in Toss"
  • Two out of three partners are solo makers, and 63% of accounts generate revenue, establishing the platform as a springboard for solo entrepreneurship
  • With 4 million monthly visitors, the platform is integrating into everyday life beyond finance, bringing the "superapp for everyday life" vision into view

The number of partner mini apps on Toss’ mini app platform "Apps in Toss" has surpassed 10,000 just one year after its official launch.

Apps in Toss is a mini app platform that runs directly within the Toss app, requiring no separate installation. Starting with around 100 partner mini apps at launch in July last year, the count passed 1,000 in February and 5,000 in June of this year before recently exceeding 10,000. Over the same period, its service categories expanded across non-financial areas including games, content, everyday convenience, and AI.

Notably, monthly active users (MAU) of Apps in Toss reached 4 million, sustaining rapid growth. Backed by Toss' user base of more than 30 million, the steady inflow of users has established the mini app platform as part of users' everyday routines.

This growth has been led by individual creators. Sixty-seven percent of all partners are solo makers who build and operate their services on their own. On a partner-account basis, 63 percent generated revenue, and more than half of solo makers earned revenue as well. The analysis attributes the rapid market traction of small-scale creators, who often lack capital and marketing resources, to the platform's rich base of 4 million monthly users and its open structure.

Cases of using Apps in Toss as a "springboard for solo entrepreneurship" are also emerging. Jian B., CEO of ARCOA and designer with 20 years of experience, chose solo entrepreneurship over re-employment and created "peeca," a mini app for card benefits. On Apps in Toss, "peeca" matched in just 10 days the number of users it had taken three months to accumulate on global app markets. Another company, founded by three university students, gathered 350,000 users within six months of launching a fortune-based service for sharing personal concerns. It also won the grand prize at a startup idea competition and received a letter of intent to invest from a venture capital firm.

Some mini apps generated significant buzz among users. A map service, created by a Seoul National University student using public data, calculates building shadows and the sun's altitude to guide users along routes with less sun exposure toward their destination, drawing attention amid this summer's heat wave. Earlier this year, “Dubai chewy cookies map” which maps stores selling the popular dessert also attracted many users by riding the trend.

Apps in Toss is also a core strategy of the "superapp for everyday life" vision that Toss unveiled last year when it announced plans to open up its own infrastructure and integrate external partners' services into the Toss app. With mini apps now surpassing 10,000, the Toss app is expanding into a platform that encompasses services across everyday life, beyond finance.

Toss has also moved to strengthen its operating policies to make this openness sustainable. Since last month, marking the platform's first anniversary, Toss has been further reinforcing the review standards and procedures for onboarding to Apps in Toss. It applied review standards as rigorous as those of global app markets, breaking down risk signals in more granular detail.

"With a sense of platform responsibility, and under the principle of 'keep the door open, but keep raising the bar,' we will narrow the risk gaps inherent to an open platform as much as possible through multiple layers of safeguards," a Toss spokesperson said. "We will further grow an open ecosystem where more than 10,000 services come together, establishing Toss as a platform where innovative entrepreneurs can freely take on challenges and grow."
